CHAPTER 18

“What about quail eggs?” Maria asks as she sits at the kitchen table with Ambrose and watches Tavi put together lunch. In one short week of regular meals, both kids have filled out a little. Not only do both of them look healthier, but she swears Ambrose has grown a full inch! The clothes the clan provided the day after the two kids arrived already look like they might be too small on him. Keeping him in clothes that fit is going to take some vigilance.

Ambrose gives Maria a look that’s equal parts amused and exasperated. “She said she can’t eat any eggs. I don’t think the size makes a difference.”

“But they’re tiny! I saw some once.” Maria makes a round shape with her thumb and first finger. “They’re only this big!”

“That small? Wow, I didn’t know eggs could be so itty-bitty,” Tavi comments with an indulgent smile. “But Ambrose is right. It doesn’t matter how small the egg is, I still can’t eat it. I’d get really sick.”

Ambrose tilts his head. “Is it only you or all cervids?”

“All cervids. We can’t eat anything that comes from an animal. Even cheese can make me feel terrible,” Tavi explains as she sets down heaping plates of food in front of the two kids.

“That explains all the veggies,” Ambrose mutters as he eyes the plate.

“Clan shifters need to feed their human forms,” Tavi teases him gently. “Fruit, veggies, and grains are good for you. There’s chicken in there, so no complaining!”

“I like it!” Maria declares and digs into her food. “The broccoli is crunchy in a good way. I could be a cervid. I don’t like fish or fried eggs anyway.”

Chuckling, Tavi fetches her plate and joins them at the table. “No fish or fried eggs. Got it.”

“Are there a lot of cervids living with clan shifters?” Ambrose asks between bites.

“As far as I know, I’m the only one,” Tavi admits.

Ambrose points his fork at her. “I thought you were human. Until you shifted your hands, you smelled a hundred percent human. But when you shifted, you smelled shifter but not like anything I’ve known before.”

“I want to see your animal,” Maria demands.

Tavi nods. “When Donovan says it’s okay, we can all go to the woods where we can shift and play.”

Maria pouts. “I can’t shift yet.”

Grinning at the little girl, Tavi taps her playfully on the nose. “That doesn’t mean you can’t play with us!”

Perking up, Maria smiles back. “When I finally shift, I’m going to be a hyena.”

That takes both Tavi and Ambrose by surprise, but the boy recovers first. “Why would you think that?”

Maria gives them a sage look. “Because you’re a hyena and your parents were wolves. Monica told me my parents were both wolves, so that means I’m going to be a hyena.”

Even Tavi, born among cervids, knows it’s highly unlikely that Maria has a hyena in her. Ambrose is a special case, but she can’t fault the girl for being hopeful. As a hyena, she would be as powerful or more so than most other shifters.
